About Us

Our Story

It started on May 21, 1974, when OTC Employees Federal Credit Union opened its doors. We were driven with a purpose of providing sound financial services to OTC and Truth employees and their families. After starting out in the basement of OTC, we eventually moved to the Depot building beside it.

A few years later, we opened our charter to include additional companies in Owatonna and moved to our current full-service location on Bridge Street. We’ve seen growth ever since.

  • In 1996, we merged with Faribault Woolen Mill Credit Union.
  • In 1997, we opened our membership to those that live, work, attend school and worship in Dodge, Rice, Steele, and Waseca County.
  • In 1999, we opened a full-service location at the Owatonna Hy-Vee Store to increase hours of operation so we can be more accessible to our members.
  • In 2005, we moved from the former Milwaukee Road railroad depot to our current full-service Faribault branch.
  • In 2019, we moved from our location within the Owatonna Hy-Vee Store to a new stand-alone full-service branch right next door.
  • In 2021, we opened a new full-service branch in Northfield to further expand our availability to our members.
  • In 2022, we expanded our membership offerings to a 26-county area in southern Minnesota to grow and serve even more members.

Today, we serve over 21,000 members in our 26-county area. We’re leading the charge to offer financial education in our communities and are here to be a trusted partner for financial success. Our staff and volunteers work hard to fulfill this mission every day.

Why Bank at HomeTown?

Why should you choose HomeTown Credit Union? As a credit union, we proudly wear our identity on our sleeves. We believe in being advocates in our local community, giving back to our members, friendly and helpful employees, and providing tools and resources to help our members manage their finances. You are not a dollar sign to us; you are a member our Credit Union family.

Within our industry, typically a credit union provides financial products on the most favorable terms it can afford to offer. This means that instead of offering accounts to customers and large dividends to a small group of owners (as banks do), credit unions offer competitive dividends, loan rates, and other benefits not found at a bank.

We Put You First, Always.

Bottom line, banks are for-profit enterprises. Credit unions are not-for-profit, financial cooperatives. In other words, our members are our owners and everything we do is to the benefit of ALL our members, not just a select few. This means that instead of trying to turn big profits and appease a small group of investors, our primary goal is to give back to our members. We are able to do that in the form of offering competitive Interest rates on loans and paying a good dividend back to our members on deposits. In turn, we are always looking for ways to go above and beyond to help our member-owners achieve their dreams, no matter how big or small. So as a credit union, HomeTown offers all the financial services that you need – and will forever remain not for the profit, but for the people – our members.
